The principle of foaming using supercritical fluids is simple: we borrow an inert gas from the atmosphere and turn this into a supercritical fluid which we dissolve into a polymer. Then, under controlled conditions, we allow the fluid trapped in the polymer to return into a gas state which, in doing so, expands the polymer into a foam. This process requires significant know-how around both the equipment and the materials to produce good-quality foams efficiently.
Both nitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) can be used as the supercritical fluid because they are inert, non-toxic and easily recoverable. This eliminates the need for chemical foaming agents, produces products of equivalent performance using less raw material and consumes fewer resources, while also creating lighter, more durable foams. We primarily use nitrogen in our processes- not only is it the most environmentally friendly option, but it also produces unparalleled product performance characteristics.

To support this, the first Innovation Centre that we will launch will be our Footwear Innovation Centre in South Korea, located near our key customer and their Tier 1 manufacturing partners. This proximity will allow us to work directly with customers, implementing new developments into specific shoe models.

Zotefoams works on best practices to ensure we sustainably manage our water and sanitation methods. We have implemented a number of processes to improve the water quality in our operations to ensure that no water with chemicals seeps into the environment, and we run a number of initiatives like our Rainwater harvesting system.

Zotefoams have strict auditing processes to ensure we uphold decent and fair standards of work across our Group and our supply chain, including identifying risks of modern slavery and child labour, and fair wage and worker rights.

Our innovative products support our customers sustainability goals and the markets they operate in. Zotefoams have strict practices in place to ensure fairness in Gender Pay and Diversity & Inclusion. This is reflected in our ESG report.

Our approach centres on two areas: (i) minimising the use of natural resources through a series of internal measures aimed at reducing our carbon footprint; and (ii) operating in markets where we offer a unique sustainable advantage to benefit society through resource efficiencies.
Climate Action
Zotefoams are focused on minimizing our impact on the environment. We annually submit to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and comply to the TCFD framework. We have conducted our TNFD analysis for 2024 and have a Carbon Reduction Plan in place based on a 2024 baseline.
